Pilot and Feasibility Projects

The six Regional Comprehensive Metabolomics Research Cores (RCMRCs) are accepting applications for exploratory biomedical research projects utilizing metabolomics technology. These "Pilot and Feasibility (P&F) studies" are intended to provide opportunities for investigators to advance basic, clinical and translational biomedical science by incorporating metabolomic technologies into their research. The awards are intended to support projects that will provide preliminary data for new extramural proposal submission. Application deadline: March 16, 2017. See our Funding Opportunities page for more information.

Human Metabolome Gene/Protein Database (MGP) - The Human Metabolome Gene/Protein Database (MGP) of metabolome-related genes and proteins contains data for over 7300 genes and over 15,500 proteins. Each record is enhanced with Gene Ontology (GO) annotations, REACTOME pathway annotations, InterPro domain annotations, UniProt annotations, and a listing of related proteins. MGP can be searched by any of MGP_ID, Entrez Gene_ID, Gene Name, Gene Symbol, Synonyms, Alternate names, HMDB Pathway, and Reactome Pathway.

Order Standards Now! As part of the NIH Common Fund's Metabolomics Program, the Metabolite Standards Synthesis Cores (MSSC) aim to provide metabolomics researchers with high quality, freely available metabolite standards. Several of these compounds have been synthesized and are now available for shipment.

Metabolomics Workbench REST Service

The REST service enables access to a variety of data (including metabolite structures, study metadata and experimental results). These requests may be carried out using a web browser or may be embedded in 3rd party applications or scripts to enable rapid programmatic access.

Funded P&F Projects 2014 (as of May 2014)

A number of Pilot and Feasibility studies (P&F) -- exploratory biomedical research projects utilizing metabolomics technology -- have recently been funded via our six Regional Comprehensive Metabolomics Research Cores (RCMRCs). These P&F awards are intended to provide opportunities for investigators to advance basic, clinical and translational biomedical science by incorporating metabolomic technologies into their research, and to support projects that will provide preliminary data for new extramural proposal submission.

Identification of Altered Metabolic Pathways in Plasma and CSF in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s Disease Using Metabolomics

In this project from the Mayo clinic, researchers examined global metabolic changes in both plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from individuals representing the spectrum of Alzheimer’s Disease - ranging from cognitively normal (CN) to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Data produced from their non-targeted metabolomics approach, point to alterations in a number of metabolic pathways, and pave the way for identification of novel therapeutic targets.

About the Metabolomics Workbench

The Metabolomics Workbench is a scalable and extensible informatics infrastructure which will serve as a national metabolomics resource. This is a companion to RCMRCs and is a part of the Common Fund Initiative in metabolomics. The Metabolomics Workbench will coordinate data activities of national and international metabolomics centers and initiatives, serve as a national data repository and develop a Workbench that will have data, query and analysis interfaces, and tools for interactive analysis and integration of metabolomics data.
