Study TitleUrine metabolic profiles of pregnant women in relation to environmental exposures

Study SummaryThe purpose of this study is to broaden our understanding of how trace metals alone and in combination with other chemical exposures contribute to these adverse pregnancy outcomes that can have significant repercussive effects in the life of the child. Additionally, our aim is to use cutting-edge metabolomics techniques to better understand mechanisms underlying these associations in order to identify opportunities for prevention when reducing exposure is difficult or impossible. Utilizing the CHEAR resources, we plan to measure trace metal concentrations in urine from the third trimester of pregnancy along with metabolomics profiles from the same time point. Study CommentsSPECIFIC AIM 1: Assess the impact of urinary trace metal concentrations from the 3rd trimester of pregnancy on birth outcomes, including spontaneous and placentally-mediated preterm delivery as well as fetal growth as characterized by repeated ultrasound measures. SPECIFIC AIM 2: Investigate the cumulative association between trace metal and phthalate exposures during pregnancy on birth outcomes. SPECIFIC AIM 3: Explore metabolomics profiles in urine from the third trimester of pregnancy in relation to: environmental exposures individually and in mixtures; birth outcomes; and previously measured oxidative stress biomarkers.
