Study TitleSpatially resolved metabolomics and isotope tracing reveal dynamic metabolic responses of dentate granule neurons with acute stimulation
Study SummaryKCl timecourse|Neuronal activity creates an intense energy demand that must be met by rapid metabolic responses. To define the metabolic adaptations of the neuron-enriched dentate granule cell (DGC) layer within the native tissue environment, we utilize acute hippocampal brain slices and perform fast metabolite preservation followed by mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) to obtain spatially resolved metabolomics and isotope tracing data. We find that membrane depolarization promotes broad metabolic changes, including increased glycolytic activity in DGCs which is accompanied by mobilization of endogenous inosine into pentose phosphates.
