Catalytic ActivityATP + N-acetyl-D-glucosamine = ADP + N-acetyl- D-glucosamine 6-phosphate. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:22692205}.
FunctionConverts endogenous N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), a major component of complex carbohydrates, from lysosomal degradation or nutritional sources into GlcNAc 6-phosphate. Involved in the N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) degradation pathway: although human is not able to catalyze formation of Neu5Gc due to the inactive CMAHP enzyme, Neu5Gc is present in food and must be degraded. Also has ManNAc kinase activity. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:22692205}.
InteractionQ9UI36:DACH1; NbExp=3; IntAct=EBI-372578, EBI-347111; Q8TBB1:LNX1; NbExp=2; IntAct=EBI-372578, EBI-739832;
PathwayAmino-sugar metabolism; N-acetylneuraminate degradation. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:22692205}.
SimilarityBelongs to the eukaryotic-type N-acetylglucosamine kinase family. {ECO:0000305}.
SubunitHomodimer. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17010375}.
Tissue SpecificityUbiquitous. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10824116}.
